First and foremost, Fort Collins Preschool needed an updated design that featured much easier navigation, and was useful to both prospective and current families. Fort Collins Preschool’s old website contained 40+ pages of content, but was challenging to navigate and not clearly arranged into content silos. Visitors needed to be able to find the content quickly and easily, without having to search for buried links or obfuscated pages.
Additionally, Fort Collins Preschool needed an improved method of informing parents of upcoming events and important school dates, a method for parents to make online tuition payments and donations, and the school needed the addition of an exclusive protected “parents only” area. Because Fort Collins Preschool is a nonprofit operating on a small budget, it was crucial that preschool volunteers detailed training on how to update and maintain their own website, and that all the website interfaces be use-friendly and easy to maintain.
Starting with the design of the website, we created a traditional home page with bright colors and clearly defined sections. Colors were derrived from Fort Collins Preschool’s logo to mimic the happy, child-friendly vision of their preschool. To ensure accessibility, we created a clean high-contrast style that is easy to read and navigate. A handwritten accent font was added, in order to enhance the consistency of the final design with their overall brand and to keep a bit of “playfulness” in the mix.
In order to ensure ease of navigation, we added two-levels of navigation, with an upper navigation bar that features tools for families that are (most likely) already enrolled in Fort Collins Preschool, and a lower (primary) navigation bar intended for prospective families, featuring information about the school and its programs. Below the two-level navigation system, we included a slider with images that evoke the type of environment that Fort Collins Preschool creates for its students as well as three strong calls to action: “Get to Know Us,” “Enroll Today,” and “Support Us.”
In order to address the need to effectively notify parents of events and key date(s), a complete calendar with multiple views and color-coded event categories was included. Site visitors can easily sort and filter the calendar to only see specific types of events and view events monthly, weekly, daily, and as a list.
A number of additional features were included in the full site, such as: online payment and contact forms, donation forms, grocery certificates for fundraising, t-shirt purchases, and more. After launch of the site, Fort Collins Preschool’s designated site manager(s) were provided with two live training sessions, as well as WordPress training videos that they could reference later.
Fort Collins Preschool received a new website that featured an updated design following current standards and best practices, and which includes an improved navigation system, full-featured calendar and events management system, and the ability to process tuition payments, donations, and other purchases. Additionally, Fort Collins Preschool was trained in how to update and maintain their own website.
Since their website’s 2015 launch, Fort Collins Preschool has seen an appreciable gain in inbound monthly traffic. Over the last year, their inbound traffic has nearly doubled. This is thanks in part to an improved site structure that incorporates modern SEO best practices, but also in part due to Fort Collins Preschool consistently putting out new content on their website. The traffic growth trend for this website appears to still be climbing, and that’s good news!
