Free Website for Nonprofits

Nominate a nonprofit you love to receive a donated website

As part of our commitment to giving back, every year we design and develop a free website to a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, nominated and voted upon by the community. We know how challenging it can be for nonprofit organizations to budget for custom website development and want make it easier for nonprofits to focus funds where they are needed most – in the community, working towards the organization’s mission.

How It Works

Free Website for Nonprofits Giveaway Overview

Each year, we accept nominations of 501(c)(3) organizations that are deserving of a new website via the form below. Organizations may be nominated by either a community member or official representative of the nonprofit. Nominations are accepted through November 15th of the applicable year at 11:59 pm Central Standard Time, after which time, nominated nonprofits will be contacted to verify 501(c)(3) status and confirm interest in receiving a free website from Road Warrior Creative.

Eligible nonprofit organizations (determined by proof of 501(c)(3) status and conforming with the official rules) will be posted on Road Warrior Creative’s Facebook Page in late November, in the form of an image with caption. For ~30 days from the time of posting (or timeframe outlined in the official rules), members of the community will have the opportunity to vote on the nonprofit organization for which they would most like us to build a free website by commenting on and/or liking the image representing the nonprofit of their choice. At the end of the 30 day voting period, a winning nonprofit will be announced and we’ll work with the organization to fully scope out and calendar their new website project, including setting a planned launched date for the new website.

Who is eligible to enter?

To be eligible to win, organizations must be based in the United States of America and must have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.  Organizations must offer worthwhile opportunities for service, volunteering, or learning on a community level; political candidates, government agencies, and organizations whose sole or primary purpose is to promote specific religious beliefs (I.e. churches) are not eligible.  Public or charter schools are considered eligible organizations for the purpose of this contest.

Organizations should have a non-discrimination policy and should not engage in discrimination based upon race, color, religion, creed, national origin, ancestry, disability, gender, sexual orientation, age, or any other characteristic protected by law.

The organization may have an existing website that is in need of a complete redesign, so long as that is noted on the application form.

Is there any purchase necessary or are there any hidden costs?

Recipients of a free website from Road Warrior Creative are not required to pay for any design or development services related to the launch of the website. Purchase or prior relationship with Road Warrior Creative will not increase the likelihood of winning. No purchase necessary to win.

Domain registration and hosting are not included and will require an additional fee (see below).

Depending upon desired functionality, the nonprofit may be responsible for purchasing and maintaining licenses for third-party WordPress plugins and/or third-party applications or tools on an ongoing basis. The exact ongoing cost will be determined in collaboration with the nonprofit during the “scoping” phase of the project.

The organization is responsible for providing all content necessary for the completion of the website, including text and photos. If stock photos are necessary, it will be the organization’s responsibility to purchase them.

Is hosting included?

No, website hosting and domain registration are not included. The nonprofit organization will be required to purchase a domain name (if they do not already have one) and an adequate hosting account suitable for running a modern WordPress website. Hosting is an ongoing expense that the nonprofit will need to budget for the life of their website.

Ongoing hosting plans may be purchased from Road Warrior Creative at a 10% nonprofit discount or may be purchased from any hosting company of the nonprofit’s choice.

What platform will the website be built in?

All websites are built in the WordPress content management system, which currently powers nearly 40% of the websites on the internet.

Will my website be ADA compliant? GDPR compliant? Will it be optimized for search engines?

Yes. We frequently work both with clients that receive government funding and clients in the European Union. We’re very familiar with accessibility and privacy laws and will ensure that your website meets or exceeds all applicable legal requirements and best practices. Following launch we will provide training to your team which will include how to maintain the website in a way that will keep it up to standards.

All websites we launch are optimized with search engine friendly code and include self-service SEO tools that allow you to easily adjust your meta tags. The free website project does not include SEO research and strategy, however, if you can tell us what keywords you would like to rank for, we can typically provide some guidance on how to structure and write your website content for those keywords.

How long will it take to receive the free website? Will the organization have to do anything?

Timelines from when the winner is announced to when the final website is launched depend upon a variety of factors including the size of the website (number of pages), desired functionality, how quickly the organization can provide content for the website, and Road Warrior Creative’s availability calendar.

Throughout the duration of the project, the organization will be required to participate collaboratively in design and functionality descisions. There will be weekly project check-in calls and fast response time will be required on all questions and/or decisions. Additionally, the organization will need to provide all content and photos for use on the website, which may require a significant copywriting effort depending upon the size of the website.

Typical website projects take several months to complete. The nonprofit should plan for a spring launch, although an official timeline will be determined in collaboration with the organization during the “scoping” phase of the project.

Do you provide support after the website is launched?

We will provide 30 days of free support within the scope of the project following the launch of your website. During this time, your team will receive two training sessions and will have access to WordPress tutorial videos to ensure that you know how to adequately edit and maintain the website.

Following the end of the support period, Road Warrior Creative would be happy to provide ongoing support or make additional modifications to the website. Ongoing requests following the end of the support period will be billed at our current hourly rate with a 20% nonprofit discount.

Recipients of the free nonprofit website are invited to continue working with us for their website needs or are welcome to have a volunteer or other developer as desired. If budgets are an issue, we are happy to provide some recommendations for lower cost support.
