How do I find SEO best practices?
Many years ago, we learned that the path to understanding search engine optimization is paved with lots of reading and research. To help you stay up-to-date, we’ve collected five resources that are consistently on the bleeding edge of search engine optimization. Keep reading to find out more!
The Moz Blog
Formerly SEOmoz and now just “Moz”, is a Seattle-based search engine optimization company that has been in operation since 2004. As a SEO business, they started as a small mother-and-son team and scaled to a “household name” in under a decade. We’ve found them to be a source of inspiration as a successful tech company, not only because of their impressive ability to hit new growth milestones every couple years, but also due to the fact that they consistently publish insightful and interesting SEO blog posts. Their Beginner’s Guide to SEO is an indispensable resource that we regularly share with our clients.
The Search Engine Journal
Although it is certainly targeted to more of an “industry insider” crowd, the Search Engine Journal (SEJ for short) can give the SEO enthusiast on your team plenty to read about. We feel like SEJ is one of the few resources that truly covers the full breadth and depth of the SEO game, with posts and articles ranging from “SEO 101” for the most up-to-date SEO best practices, to a full fledged “News” section that tracks relevant industry news, which helps experienced SEO veterans stay on their toes. If you’re looking to optimize beyond your website, SEJ also writes about content marketing, social media, and paid search. For us, visiting the Search Engine Journal has become as comfortable as turning on CNN.
Quick Sprout Blog
Does the name Neil Patel ring any bells? If it doesn’t, you should take a moment to read about him. He started some big online names, such as Kissmetrics, Hello Bar, and Crazy Egg. Neil works with some even bigger names: Microsoft, General Motors, and Amazon to name just three. He is widely considered as an SEO guru, content marketing master, link building expert…. You get the idea. Quick Sprout is his blog, where Neil shares nuggets of SEO wisdom several times each month. If getting free SEO advice from a guy who’s made multiple tech entrepreneur “Top 100” lists wasn’t enough, Quick Sprout University is also a thing. This SEO blog isn’t leaving our bookmarks folder anytime soon.
So far, we’ve shown you blogs that are primarily a resource for larger-scale businesses and organizations. Where should the independent lifestyle and niche bloggers go? While the above are good resources for just about anyone, ProBlogger certainly takes the cake when it comes to “looking out for the little guy.” Although posts on ProBlogger can run the gamut from 5 Ways To Earn Social Traction, to more SEO focused content such as 5 Mistakes Bloggers Make with SEO, we’ve found them to be a strong resource for individuals or small groups that want to improve their SEO for blogs. Did we mention that they have a podcast, too?
The HubSpot Blog
HubSpot is a well known inbound marketing and CRM platform that develops software to help businesses get more customers online. Although it’s not necessarily their focus, we’ve found that HubSpot consistently posts relevant content that makes for a nice supplement to the above sources. When reading about SEO news, it is always good to cross-reference between multiple sources to make sure you’re getting the whole story. Also, HubSpot’s blog topic idea generator is the best thing since sliced bread. We use it all the time and it may or may not have helped us come up with the idea for this post.
